So there was Matt Snider, happily casting a white Clouser Minnow into the chilly waters of Horsetooth Reservoir in search of walleye and smallmouth bass the week before Thanksgiving when this thing grabbed hold of the fly – a really big thing.

Whatever tugged the Fort Collins resident around for a time fought like a lake trout and, when he got it to the boat, looked like one, too. As it turned out, Snider’s prize was actually a splake, a man-made hybrid of lake trout and brook trout. Since the fish weighed 11 pounds, a huge specimen for any species at Horsetooth, Snider didn’t much care.
