A Frontier Airlines employee slipped on ice at Denver International Airport and his leg was run over by the front wheel of an airplane Sunday.

The Frontier ramp agent, a five-year airline employee in his 40s, was putting a rubber stop in front of the plane near gate A39 about 11:30 a.m. Sunday when he slipped, and the plane’s nose gear rolled over his leg, airport and airline officials said.

The worker was taken to a hospital for treatment of a broken leg and dislocated knee. Frontier spokesman Joe Hodas said the result could have been much worse. “We weren’t sure if they were going to be able to save his leg,” he said. “We’re happy that they could.”

Hodas said the area where the accident occurred was plowed as of Sunday morning, but keeping the north side of the terminal snow- and ice-free is a challenge, as the area gets very little sun.

Cops shoot robbery suspect after standoff

A robbery suspect was shot in the hip Saturday after a standoff with Denver police.

Officers received a call at 5:30 p.m. Saturday reporting a robbery at the Sinclair gas station at 2105 Federal Blvd. During the robbery, the suspect held his waistband as if he were indicating he had a gun, police said Sunday.

Officers followed the robber’s footprints to a house in the 2200 block of Irving Street and went inside about 8:15 p.m., confronting a man who appeared to be hiding.

The man did not comply with commands and began to move his hands, leading officers to believe he was searching for a gun, so an officer shot the man in the hip, police said.

The man then fled to the attic. The metro SWAT team and negotiators were called to the scene before the man surrendered about 10 p.m., police said.

Denver police Detective John White said the suspect was identified as Daniel H. Ayon, 43. He was taken to Denver Health Medical Center and treated for a gunshot wound. He was then arrested in connection with the robbery.

Police are investigating whether Ayon was involved in a similar robbery at the gas station Friday and in other robberies in the area.

He was also being held on a vehicular-assault warrant issued by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said the shooting by the officer will be investigated by the department and the Denver district attorney’s office.

Police said witnesses described the gunman as a black male in his late teens, wearing a blue hat and a tan coat. The shooter left the scene in a midsize red car.

Police said it’s not clear whether the victim was the intended target.
