Heralded receivers reportedly commit to CU
According to various Internet recruiting sites, Colorado football coach Dan Hawkins has landed recent oral commitments from two talented receivers.
Markques Simas, a 6-foot-1, 198-pounder from Mira Mesa High School in San Diego, told Scout.com that he picked CU over Arizona State, Oregon and San Diego State. Simas caught 50 passes for about 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns this fall. He is ranked the 12th-best receiver nationally by Scout.com and, as a four-star prospect, the No. 1 wideout in California by Rivals.com.
Kendrick Celestine, 5-11 and 173 pounds, caught 45 passes for 924 yards and 11 touchdowns at Mamou (La.) High School as a senior. Celestine is a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, which ranks him as the No. 78 wideout nationally.
MLL supplemental draft today
The Denver Outlaws, Major League Lacrosse runners-up, have picks in all but the first round of today’s 10-round MLL supplemental draft. General manager Brian Reese is closing in on a trade for a first-round pick, however. The draft pool is made up of players who did not make each team’s 20-man roster, along with those who were not selected in last spring’s college draft or rookies who were never activated. The Outlaws exposed three players for the draft: Chris Cercy, Brandon Testa and Greg Bastis.
Rapids to open new stadium on national TV
The Rapids will open their new stadium, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, in a nationally televised game against D.C. United on April 7 at 1:30 p.m.
The new 18,000-seat stadium is a 24-field, fully lit professional soccer complex just west of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge in Commerce City.
Lincoln grad Hernandez gets WAC honor
Fresno State’s Hector Hernandez, a graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School, was named the Western Athletic Conference men’s basketball player of the week. In last week’s 74-69 win over Oregon State, Hernandez scored 23 points and had a career-high 23 rebounds.
Metro State baseball signs three
The Metro State baseball team has signed Rampart High School catcher Brett Bowman, third baseman Jordan Stouffer of Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins and outfielder Taylor Zambard from Sumner, Wash., to national letters of intent.
