Evert, Mill untie the knot
Tennis legend Chris Evert became single for the third time Monday after a brief hearing before a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., family court judge. Evert, 51, and skiing hall of famer Andy Mill, 53, who shared a $4 million winter home in Aspen, were divorced after a judge signed off on a settlement that calls for Evert to pay Mill $7 million in cash and securities within 48 hours. The couple was married for 18 years and has three boys, ages 15, 12 and 10. “This was the worst day of my life,” Mill said hours after the hearing, his voice cracking with emotion. In financial disclosure forms, Evert – who has been seen recently in the company of soon-to-be-divorced golfer Greg Norman – claims to be worth $24 million.
Wade sportsman of year
Dwyane Wade is Sports Illustrated’s sportsman of the year, the fifth pro basketball player honored in the 52-year history of the award. Wade, who led the Miami Heat to the NBA title and earned NBA Finals MVP honors last season, will receive the award Dec. 14 in New York. “Dwyane embodies that winning spirit by playing for his team, not himself, and by working in the community to ensure young people have the chance to realize their own dreams,” SI group editor Terry McDonell said. The sportsman of the year issue will hit newsstands on Wednesday.
Fantasy football of another kind
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, on Fox Sports Net’s “Pro Football Preview,” denied he’s dating Jessica Simpson but said country singer Carrie Underwood is “cute and does it the right way. But I’m never going to mention anyone else’s name again.” ESPN’s Mike Ditka suggested Simpson might be the big beneficiary of Romo’s new fame, saying, “She got much-needed publicity.”
