Air Force junior linebacker Drew Fowler and Wyoming safety John Wendling and offensive lineman Chase Johnson, both seniors, were the only Front Range representatives on the all-Mountain West Conference first team announced Tuesday.
For the first time in league history, Colorado State did not have a player on the first team. Offensive tackle Clint Oldenburg and punter Jimmie Kaylor, a first-team pick last year, were on the second team. Air Force halfback Aaron Brown and offensive tackle Robert Kraay made the second team along with Wyoming tight end Wade Betschart, offensive lineman Jason Karcher, defensive end Corey Mace and linebacker Ward Dobbs.
BYU quarterback Jason Beck was the unanimous pick for offensive player of the year, and Utah’s Eric Weddle repeated his defensive player of the year honor. BYU second-year coach Bronco Mendenhall took coach of the year honors after an undefeated league mark.
Beck, Weddle, BYU linebacker Cameron Jensen and TCU defensive end Tommy Blake were unanimous picks in the combined coaches-media poll. TCU placed six players on the first team, and BYU and New Mexico tied with five each.
