A fire broke out in a Colorado Springs apartment complex early this morning, causing extensive damage to at least four apartments.

No injuries were reported and the fire was put out within an hour, said fire department Lt. Carl Lyman.

The fire started in the Berkshire Apartments near Vickers Street and Academy Boulevard in the north central section of the city just before 6 a.m., today.

Lyman said the apartment complex of 16 units suffered extensive damage including the collapse of a chimney. At least two and possibly four units were destroyed. Lyman said others suffered smoke and water damage but he didn’t know the extent. No damage estimate could be given.

Lyman said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
