Fort Collins – Jason Smith scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds, and Stuart Creason and Tyler Smith added 17 points each as Colorado State beat Northern Colorado 75-66 on Wednesday night.
Colorado State (6-2) overcame a five-point deficit late in the second half with 50 percent shooting after the team shot just 37.9 percent in the first half. Corey Lewis scored 11 points and had 11 rebounds for the Rams.
“I thought our guys at halftime made some adjustments and were very attentive to do the things that we needed to do to get back in the game,” CSU coach Dale Layer said. “Fortunately we had enough left in our tank to pull it out.”
Senior guard Cory Lewis had his first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Sean Taibi scored 23 points and Kirk Archibeque had 17 for Northern Colorado (1-8). The Bears trailed 30-28 at halftime but built a 51-46 lead with 9:31 left in the game.
CSU’s defense forced several turnovers in the final minutes of the game and hit its final 15 free throws to build on its lead.
WYOMING 91, DENVER 59 at Laramie: Brad Jones scored 24 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Wyoming to a blowout over the Pioneers.
Brandon Ewing added 20 points, six rebounds and six assists for Wyoming (7-1) in the 142nd meeting between the two teams.
Jones scored nine points as Wyoming used an 18-10 run to pull away from a 38-30 halftime lead to take a 56-40 lead with 14:25 remaining.
The Cowboys were up 60-47 before scoring 16 unanswered points, including 3-pointers by Ewing and Jones, to take a 66-47 lead with 8:33 remaining.
The Cowboys shot 63.3 percent from the field in the second half to just 34.6 for Denver (1-8), which was playing without leading scorer DaShawn Walker (broken foot).
Antonio Porch led Denver with 17 points and five rebounds while Steve Wetrich added 15 points.
