A state trooper was injured early this morning in a three-vehicle accident as he was attempting to stop a reckless driver in Jefferson County.

The trooper, whose name has not been released, collided with a car at West Alameda Avenue and Kipling Street around 3 a.m., according to Colorado State Patrol spokesman Trooper Eric Wynn.

That car then collided with a street sweeper. The trooper and the driver of the car were both taken to St. Anthony’s Central hospital with injuries not considered to be life-threatening.

The incident began on Interstate 70 near Wadsworth when the trooper noticed a silver or light blue car driving recklessly. As the trooper attempted to stop the car, the driver sped away, exiting northbound onto Kipling.

As the trooper closed in, the driver made a U-turn heading south on Kipling, Wynn said.

At Alameda, the fleeing driver ran a red light as a car and the street sweeper, heading east on Alameda, entered the intersection. The trooper collided with the first car, which then hit the street sweeper.

The wanted driver got away. The car has a temporary registration tag and tinted windows.
