Getting your player ready...

Silent night, holy notes. …

By now, you know the drill with ex-Broncos in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Broncos have made six Super Bowl appearances, tied with the Steelers for the second-most in NFL history – the Cowboys have eight – but have one player in the Hall. Must have been the vertically striped socks is all I can figure.

For the record, John Elway doesn’t like being the Chosen One. Detests it, if you really want to know.

He wants Floyd Little in there. Randy Gradishar and Terrell Davis, too. But the one that really bothers him is Gary Zimmerman.

“The one that gets me is Zim,” Elway said. “He was an all-time top five left tackle. I remember when we got him. I had never seen a player like that. He’d lock his arms on a guy and just stop him in his tracks. That’s why his shoulder went out on him late in his career. He played his last year with one arm.” …

Marty Schottenheimer, circa training camp: “Some people don’t think we’re very good.” Some idiots, that is. LaDainian Tomlinson leads the NFL with 23 rushing touchdowns. The Cowboys are second in the league with 17. …

Now that Jay Cutler is out of town and not seeing this note, thought I’d let you know the Chargers lead the league with 44 sacks. …

Memo to Mike Shanahan: Saw the Browns play the Steelers the other night and, trust me, none of their defensive linemen are worth trading for. …

Sorry, Bronco Nation, but the numbers suggest a total mismatch today at Qualcomm Stadium. Or maybe you haven’t noticed that the Chargers are plus-140 points on their opponents, the Broncos plus-27. …

Talked to Jason Jennings the other day and, just as I suspected, he’s low-keying everything and getting ready to report to Tucson for Rockies spring training. But he did say two words worth noting: “It’s crazy.” As in, the seller’s market in free agency. …

Five years and $55 million for Gil Meche? I’d like to congratulate the Rockies for not making that deal. Make no doubt, none whatsoever, a Meche signing would affect the Rockies’ ability to retain Jennings. If a .500ish pitcher with two shoulder surgeries can get five years, J.J. can get it in a New York minute. As in, New York Yankees or New York Mets. …

The lights are on, but apparently nobody’s home in the Red Sox front office. How else to explain letting Johnny Damon, their heart and soul, get away for $53 million, then signing J.D. Drew, your basic injury waiting to happen, for $70 million. If they wanted to throw around that kind of jack, they should have picked up Bobby Abreu at the trading deadline. …

Just a friendly reminder. Only 15 shopping days till Christmas, so you don’t have much time left to not buy Ron Artest’s CD. …

Why am I thinking Michael Jordan was a better cleanup hitter than Artest is a crooner? …

By the numbers: 29-47. That’s the combined record, going into Saturday night, of the Elvis impersonators who’ve beaten the Nuggets at the Pepsi Center. That would be the Knicks, Grizzlies, Hawks and Timberpuppies. …

Introducing the quarterback for my nightmare-league team: Chris Weinke, 1-15 as a starter in the Not For Long. The bad news is he’ll start today for the Panthers. The worse news is their season is on the line. …

You won’t be able to hear it in Our Town, but ex-CU coach Gary Barnett will be doing color commentary on the Bronx-Chargers lovefest for Sports USA Radio. …

The Saints are 21st in the league in rushing, but lead the league in offense. How can that be? Let me answer the question with another question: What part of Drew Brees is the most underrated player of his generation don’t you get? …

By the way, anybody happen to notice the Colts have scored 17 points or fewer in three of their past four games? Anybody? Thought so. …

Brandon Marshall, on his 5-yard catch last week that he turned into a 71-yard touchdown: “When I got back to the sidelines, one of our guys said, ‘Where has that been since camp?”‘

Moral to the story? If that kid hadn’t gotten hurt, he was going to be the best No. 3 wide receiver of the Shanahan era. And next season, he’ll be the No. 2 wideout. …

Sixteen mil and incentives for Barry Bonds. Not bad for a guy who’s going to drive in 70 runs and allow 80 with his glove. …
