Philadelphia – Comcast Corp., the largest U.S. cable operator, hired Tony Werner, head of technology at Liberty Global Inc., to be its chief technology officer, replacing David Fellows.

Fellows decided in June to work part time, Philadelphia-based Comcast said Monday in a statement. Werner, who starts at the end of this month, leads strategy for video, voice and data services at Douglas County- based Liberty Global, the largest owner of cable-TV systems outside the U.S.

Comcast began a search for a new technology chief after Fellows, who had been commuting from Boston, said he planned to cut back. Werner will guide the company’s technology strategy as it introduces new products and competition heats up with telephone companies such as Verizon Communications Inc.

Werner is the second major hire for Comcast in less than a month. On Nov. 28, the company announced that co-chief financial officers John Alchin and Lawrence Smith would retire and be replaced by Michael Angelakis, a managing director at Providence Equity Partners.

Fellows will become a part-time executive fellow in January. He joined Comcast in 2002 and was previously chief technology officer of AT&T Broadband.
