PERTH AMBOY, N.J.-

Seven beheaded animals–three chickens, three pigeons and a fish–were discovered Tuesday on a central New Jersey beach.

Police are investigating the strange discovery but say they have few leads.

The dead animals were found together in a bag on the beach at Sadowski Parkway and First Street in Perth Amboy around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. Perth Amboy Deputy Chief E.J. McDonald said someone called to report it.

“It appears that these animals were in a bag that probably washed up with the tide,” McDonald said. “Initially it came in along the lines of maybe it was a shrine or ritualistic set up, but that’s not the case.”

McDonald said the animals were probably beheaded somewhere else. They were found in a black plastic bag that officials said may have been torn by local animals.

McDonald had no further information on who discovered the animals or who may have beheaded them.

“Unfortunately, at this state of the game, we have very little to work with,” he said.

The local chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, as well as Perth Amboy police, are investigating the incident, McDonald said.
