Colorado sports teams

Denver is one of only two cities in the United States that has eight professional sports teams – Denver Broncos football, Denver Nuggets basketball, Colorado Avalanche hockey, Colorado Rockies baseball, Colorado Rapids soccer, Denver Crush arena football, Colorado Outlaws lacrosse and Colorado Mammoth lacrosse. Philadelphia is the other city with eight teams.

In 1998 and 1999, the Broncos won the Super Bowl; in 1996 and 2001, the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup. In April 1993, the Colorado Rockies’ opening game had the highest attendance in baseball history and later broke 11 major-league attendance records.

In May 1995, Coors Field opened to host the Rockies. The Pepsi Center, opened in 1999, is home to the Avalanche, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Crush and Colorado Mammoth. Invesco Field at Mile High opened in 2001 as the new home of the Broncos, making Denver the only city in the U.S. to open three sports stadiums in 10 years.

The Colorado Rapids soccer team will soon play in a new, 18,000-seat stadium just west of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge in Commerce City. The Rapids will open the new stadium, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, April 7.

REGIONAL NOTES

JEFFERSON COUNTY

OK’d budget includes reserves

A 2007 budget of $397.9 million was approved unanimously Tuesday by the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners.

For the first time, the budget includes the establishment of a 10 percent reserve in each county fund. A formal reserve-fund policy will be considered next year. A $26,000 appropriation to the Jefferson Conservation District was eliminated despite requests from several residents to retain it.

Overall, the budget holds the line on spending and decreases capital improvement projects based on projections for flat revenues.
