Burbot brigade
Concerned Wyoming fisheries biologists netted 82 burbot in Flaming Gorge Reservoir during a November fish population survey. These predatory fish, not native to the Green River drainage, were captured in three nets during just two nights of sampling.
Also called ling cod, burbot are native to the Wind and Tongue drainages to the northeast and made their way into the Green through illegal “bucket brigades.” They already have made their way upstream into the New Fork tributary upstream from Pinedale. Aggressive feeders, burbot are likely to consume small trout and compete with other sportfish for food.
SLWCF expansion
Local communities will receive steady funding for parks and wildlife through Stateside Land and Water Conservation Fund legislation sponsored by senators Ken Salazar of Colorado and Lamar Alexander of Tennessee. Attached to larger bill approving energy exploration in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, the act stipulates that 12.5 percent of lease sale revenues be directed to the enhancement of open space, parkland, wildlife habitat and recreation areas.
