A Fort Collins man who police suspect robbed a grocery store pharmacy and fired shots Friday morning could face charges of armed robbery and kidnapping.

Police say David Dubois, 19, entered the Safeway store at 460 S. College Ave. in Fort Collins just before 10:30 a.m. wearing a mask and carrying a rifle. Police confirmed shots were fired, but exactly how many and where the shots ended up remains under investigation.

No one was hurt.

Thirty minutes before the robbery, Dubois’ mother called police because she thought her son might be suicidal. She told police Dubois had called her “to say goodbye,” said Rita Davis, spokeswoman for Fort Collins police.

Police said that when they arrested Dubois moments after the robbery, they found a loaded assault rifle, a loaded .375-caliber handgun and stolen pharmaceuticals – including the powerful painkiller OxyContin – in his pickup truck.

Dubois had already consumed some of the drugs by the time police located him sitting in his truck several blocks from the Safeway, Davis said.

Dubois was taken to Poudre Valley Hospital for psychiatric evaluation before being transferred to the Larimer County Detention Center.
