Foothill United Way’s third annual Socks and Mittens Drive was its most successful ever, collecting nearly 2,500 cold- weather clothing items. Held Nov. 6 through Dec. 8, the drive gathered necessities that have been distributed to organizations in Boulder and Broomfield counties that help children and adults in need.
Diageo Co. is launching its “We Don’t Serve Teens” campaign to discourage underage drinking in Colorado. Unveiled in October, the campaign was created by the Federal Trade Commission and The Century Council to educate adults on the legal repercussions of furnishing alcohol to minors.
Nine students from the University of Northern Colorado’s Monfort College of Business have been awarded scholarships for the 2006-07 academic year from the Harry Trueblood Foundation. Each student received a $3,000 scholarship.
Community Education Centers Inc. will expand its range of therapeutic nonresidential services with the addition of a research-based outpatient offender program for abusers of methamphetamine. The new treatment program will be implemented in January and located at Williams Street Center.
The Denver and Colorado Bar associations presented The Children’s Hospital Foundation with a check for $130,237.32 at the Denver Bar Association’s board of trustees meeting. The money was raised by association members and law firms that participated in the Courage Classic, a three-day, 155-mile bike ride through the Rocky Mountains.
The University of Colorado at Boulder will expand a need-based scholarship program designed to attract and retain nontraditional students through an $80,000 Daniels Opportunity Scholarship grant from the Daniels Fund, beginning in 2007. Recruitment efforts will target adult learners, GED recipients, foster-care youths and returning military personnel.
Lewis Hotels, owner and operator of The Golden Hotel and Boulder Creek Quality Inn & Suites, was recently honored with two 2006 Platinum Hospitality Awards from Choice Hotels International Inc. The Golden Hotel and Boulder Creek Quality Inn & Suites were recognized because of their high scores for guest satisfaction.
Glen Cortese has been chosen as the next music director and conductor of the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra. Cortese’s selection culminated a two-year search. Cortese has been conducting for more than 20 years nationally and internationally. He serves as artistic director of the Oregon Mozart Players and the New York Chamber Sinfonia.
