Do knitting and travel mix?

Well, the needles and yarn are certainly portable. And a new book called “One-Skein Wonders: 101 Yarn Shop Favorites” can help you find some of the best yarn shops around the country.

The book is a collection of patterns that can be made with one skein of yarn, based on the premise that many knitters have orphan skeins lying around that are too small for big projects and too beautiful to discard.

The book has patterns for hats, mittens, scarves, bags, hairclips, belts and other accessories. Each idea comes from a different yarn shop.

They include Haus of Yarn in Nashville; KnitWit Yarn Shop, Portland, Maine; Clickity Sticks & Yarns, Minneapolis; Hilltop Yarn, Seattle; Loavell Fiberworks, Beaver Creek, Ohio; Yarn LLC, New Haven, Conn.; Grafton Yarn Store, Grafton, Wis.; Baskets of Yarn, Charlotte, N.C.; Enticements, Decatur, Ill.; My Sister’s Knits, Chicago; Gwen Steege, Williamstown, Mass.; The Dragonfly Yarn Shop, Janesville, Wis.; and Knitting, Etc., Ithaca, N.Y.

The $18.95 paperback book is edited by Judith Durant and published by Storey Publishing, based in North Adams, Mass.; details at .
