NEW YORK-

New Orleans and Alexandria, Egypt, are among Travel + Leisure magazine’s “up-and-coming destinations” for 2007.

Alexandria, which housed the world’s largest library in ancient times, is home today to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina––a 21st-century library with striking architecture, a planetarium and museums. Early in the new year, a new Four Seasons resort will open in nearby San Stefano on the Mediterranean.

Travel + Leisure’s January issue also says New Orleans is back and ready for visitors. In addition, the magazine’s list of 2007 hotspots includes Quito, Ecuador, which has become easier to get to with the addition of more flights from the U.S.; Istria, Croatia, known for vineyards, medieval villages and beaches; St. Lucia in the Caribbean, which has a spate of new hotels, including numerous luxury options; and Macau, the Las Vegas of the Far East.

Macau is a former Portuguese enclave that includes a peninsula and two small islands off China’s southern coast 35 miles west of Hong Kong. It is the only place in China with legal casino gambling. Its resorts include the Wynn Macau, which is part of billionaire casino mogul Steve Wynn’s Wynn Resorts company along with the Wynn Las Vegas hotel-casino.
