Boulder – Both University of Colorado basketball games on Saturday, Dec. 30, were cancelled Friday when CU’s opponents, Texas Christian (men) and Houston (women) opted not to board their respective flights to Colorado.
Officials from both schools cited the weather conditions in Colorado, despite the fact that their flights were not cancelled.
The doubleheader had the TCU men playing Ricardo Patton’s Buffaloes at 1 p.m. at the Coors Events Center, with the Houston women to play Kathy McConnell-Miller’s team at 7 p.m. The games will not be rescheduled this season.
“After all the efforts we made and with extensive communication with both institutions, we were extremely disappointed that our opponents on Saturday elected not to make their respective trips to Boulder,” said Tom McGann, CU’s director of game management and operations. “We were wholeheartedly convinced that we would have been able to successfully host the men’s and women’s games due to the fine work performed by several entities. The roads on and around campus are great, the facilities staff, CU parking management, the CU police and CDOT (Colorado Department of Transportation) did an outstanding job readying campus for the games.”
“I’m empathetic our coaches and student-athletes who made every effort to be here during this holiday week, the concessions that they made to be prepared to play these games and represent CU,” added athletic director Mike Bohn.
TCU owes Colorado a return home game from last season, when the Buffs visited Dallas and left with a 77-59 victory.
It’s the second straight game cancelled for the men, as UC-Davis was slated to visit Boulder on Dec. 23, with that contest cancelled due to the blizzard conditions that shut down Denver International Airport and delayed or cancelled over 1,000 flights. The end result with the TCU cancellation is that the men’s team will go 25 days between games since last playing December 9 against Colorado State.
The Colorado men (3-6) close out the non-conference portion of their schedule next Wednesday (Jan. 3) against Central Florida (8-2); the CU women begin Big 12 Conference play the same day against Missouri; the doubleheader gets underway at 5:30 p.m. with the men’s game, with the women’s expected to start at 8 p.m.
The ticket office will coordinate efforts to honor all ticket obligations, include all season ticket holders as well as those who purchased individual game tickets.
