Hit the trail

12th Annual Winter Trails Day| Free snowshoeing and cross-country skiing Saturday at Frisco Nordic Center and Echo Lake | call 970-453-6855 or visit wintertrails.org.

Take the first step (or glide, as the case may be) and get rid of some of those holiday pounds during Winter Trails national initiative to get people moving during the winter months. This one-day event attracted more than 12,000 people nationally last year. For those new to the sport, let trained guides teach you to snowshoe or cross-country ski at Frisco’s Peninsula Recreation Area or Echo Lake.

Swing time

Colorado Swing will perform everything from classic Big Band to tango and foxtrot at this all-ages dance. And if you’re unsure about steps, get there at 7 p.m. for dance lessons. The ball is sponsored by Friends of Traditional Dance, which hold periodic live-music dances at Club Ticos. Colorado Swing arrangements include the music of Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Pasty Cline and Brian Setzer, to name a few.

Be prepared

Avalanche class for women | Babes in the Backcountry and Crested Butte Mountain Guides present a two-day class for those who more to learn more about traveling safely in avalanche country.| Jan. 12-14; $250 but space is limited; call 970-453-4060 or visit babesinthebackcountry.com.

This course offers in-depth information on the factors that go into hazard evaluation and decision-making in the backcountry. The two-day course will cover avalanche phenomena, terrain evaluation, route finding and companion rescue. Rental gear and demo equipment will be available.
