The 17th-ranked University of Denver gymnastics team, led by seniors Heather Huffaker and Casey Dobyns and sophomore Jessica Lopez, begins its season today at the prestigious Super Six Challenge in Fayetteville, Ark.

The event is hosted by No. 15 Arkansas.

The six-team meet also features No. 3 Florida, No. 7 Nebraska, No. 9 LSU and No. 14 Penn State.

The Pioneers went 20-8 last season and finished No. 16. They return 22 of 24 routines from last season.

The Super Six Challenge will be aired on EPSN2 on tape-delay at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 14.

Skyhawks’ Cunliffe invited to MLS combine

Former Fort Lewis College soccer standout John Cunliffe is one of 62 players – and the only Division II player – invited to Major League Soccer’s pre-draft combine in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., this weekend.

The MLS draft is Jan. 12.

Eagles tie CHL record for consecutive wins

Ed McGrane notched a hat trick, including two short-handed goals, to lead the Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League to a 5-3 victory over the visiting Arizona Sundogs at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland.

It was the Eagles’ 12th straight victory, tying a CHL record for consecutive wins.

Seth Leonard added a goal and two assists for Colorado (23-4-0), which leads the Northwest Division, and goal- tender Marco Emond stopped 28-of-31 shots for his ninth straight win. Brent Kelly led Southwest Division-leading Arizona (14-13-1) with a goal and an assist.

The Youngstown Steelhounds scored three unanswered goals to top the host Rocky Mountain Rage 5-2 at the Broomfield Event Center.
