Boulder – A night of basketball produced plenty of trash-talking for both sides of a long-standing city rivalry between Boulder and Fairview.
And the boys’ game in particular provided all the action the raucous crowd at the Coors Events Center could have asked for Thursday night, a game that ended in wild fashion in a 54-53 Fairview victory in the Class 5A Centennial League opener for the teams.
“You know it’s never the end until the very end because crazy stuff always happens in rivalry games,” Fairview’s clutch free-throw shooter James Melillo said.
The game looked to be all but over when Melillo intercepted a crosscourt pass and followed up by sinking 3-of-4 free throw attempts in the final minutes.
Melillo scored 13 points for Fairview (7-3, 1-0) and Kyle Moore added 10. Boulder junior Mitch Fraser led scorers with 22 points and David Bremner finished with 15 for Boulder (6-2, 0-1).
