Two Lakewood police detectives shot and killed a man who charged them armed with two knives late Wednesday night at a Lakewood home, authorities say.
The man, identified as James R. Abeyta, 37, was shot to death in the 1600 block of South Ammons St. at about 11:30 p.m., said Steve Davis, Lakewood police spokesman.
Police received a call from a woman three minutes earlier saying she was worried her sister’s ex-boyfriend was headed to her sister’s house.
While police were responding, Abeyta called Lakewood police saying he was there and threatened police if they came.
Abeyta rushed police with the knives, ignoring their warning to drop the weapons, Davis said.
The detectives shot him as he advanced toward them, he said.
The sister of the original caller had left her home before Abeyta arrived, Davis said.
The Jefferson County Shoot Team will conduct the investigation into the shooting. After completing their final report, it will be submitted to the district attorney for a review of the case.
The agents involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure, Davis said. Their names were not released.
