The Northern Colorado wrestling team, faced with three consecutive matches against ranked opponents to begin the season, earned its first victory with a 22-16 upset of No. 22 Harvard at the Lone Star Duals in South Grand Prairie, Texas, on Saturday. It was UNC’s first win over a ranked opponent since rejoining Division I in 2003.

The Bears, who began their season with losses to Minnesota and Nebraska, topped the Crimson behind pins from freshman Tony Mustari and sophomore Kenny Hashimoto. Mustari, a graduate of Greeley Central High School, pinned Harvard’s Ryan Fitzgerald in 1:17 in the 125-pound division. At 141, Hashimoto pinned Max Meltzer in 3:49.

Also, UNC’s Luke Salazar, a Thornton High School graduate, earned a 10-0 major decision at 157, and Shawn Vincent got a 13-1 major decision at 184.

Brown, Wafer pace 14ers to NBADL win

The Colorado 14ers of the NBA Development League got a game-high 29 points from Elton Brown, and Von Wafer added 28 points in a 129-118 victory over the visiting Bakersfield Jam at the Broomfield Event Center.

Rick Rickert added 24 for the 14ers (9-5). Roderick Riley’s 23 points led Bakersfield (5-10).

Eagles keep rolling, extend win streak

The Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League extended their record winning streak to 14 games, routing the Rocky Mountain Rage 5-2 at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland.

Five players scored for the Eagles (25-4-0), who are in first place in the Northwest Division and haven’t lost at home in 17 games.
