Part of the fun of dressing up the nest is the chance to express one’s personal style through decorating. A mishmash of hand-me-downs and clashing accessories won’t do. So experts suggest do-it-yourselfers become conversant in home-style and how it relates to their individual taste – thereby narrowing their design decisions.
But with terms like “contemporary,” “modern,” “Southwestern” and “country cottage” saturating the pop lexicon, translating individual style to the home can be daunting.
Linda Totsch is a regional merchandising executive with KB Home. Her staff uses a “personality wall” to help new-home buyers pinpoint their taste in cabinets, countertops, lighting, flooring and fixtures. “We spend the time so they aren’t wasting their(s),” Totsch says.
