Officials at the Jefferson County Airport in Broomfield confirmed today that Denver Police notified them about five people to watch out for in connection with the Darrent Williams murder. They were asked to notify authorities if the men tried to charter a plane. One of the men on the watch list was Willie Clark, who has been described as a “person of interest” in the shooting of the Broncos’ cornerback.
Also today, a police source said officials at Denver International Airport were given the names of three people to watch for a few days after New Year’s Day, when Williams was killed when his Hummer limousine was sprayed with bullets after leaving a nightclub.
Denver police, faced with the daunting task of investigating one of Denver’s boldest, gangland-style murders in recent memory, have been unusually tight-lipped about their progress.
It’s believed the investigation into the New Year’s Day murder of Denver Broncos player Darrent Williams has focused primarily on suspected gang members, whom officers describe as extremely loyal to each other, even willing to go to prison before they would snitch on a fellow member.
Only a few of those riding in the limo have been identified other than Williams. They include Bronco teammates Javon Walker and Brandon Marshall, as well as two other occupants who were wounded, Nicole Reindl and Brandon Flowers.
The driver of the limo has not been identified, nor have the rest of the passengers that night been named.
Police have made one arrest, of Clark, 23, who was picked up at his attorney’s office at West 11th Avenue and Osage Street, a few blocks from where Williams died when his limo was sprayed with at least 14 rounds from an automatic weapon. Police said Clark was picked up on an unrelated parole violation for living at an address different from where he said he would be living when released from prison.
9News, citing police sources, has reported that Clark is a member of the Tre Tre Crips gang and is now a suspect in the shooting because he was in the car from which the shots were fired, although he is not believed to have pulled the trigger. Police Chief Gerry Whitman has said only that Clark is “a person of interest” in the case.
The car from which the shots were fired, a Chevy Tahoe SUV, is owned by Brian Hicks. Hicks is a member of the Tre Tre Crips gang, according to assistant district attorney David Karpel. Hicks was in jail facing unrelated charges at the time of the shooting.
CBS4-Denver reporter Brian Maass also reported that one of the passengers in the limo is the daughter of a Denver police sergeant, but didn’t identify her.
