GET GOING|Confirming what most parents of teen girls could tell you, between eighth grade and their senior year in high school, girls slack off when it comes to exercise. Participation in running, bicycling, basketball, soccer, softball and dance among girls went from 45 percent to 34 percent between eighth and 12th grade, according to a study by the University of South Carolina at Columbia published in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health. Early exposure to sports and physical education in schools increase the likelihood of people continuing to exercise, researchers said.

THE FIT LIST|Denver ranks No. 7 in Cooking Light magazine’s survey of the country’s fittest 20 cities. Among the factors that went into the ratings were the percentage of people who exercise, the percentage who are overweight, dollars per capita spent on parklands, and such stats as chef wages and number of Whole Foods stores per capita. Ten cities are profiled in the magazine’s current issue, but you’ll have to wait until June to read the full report on the Queen City.
