Matt Gelso’s nordic win in the men’s 20-kilometer freestyle led the University of Colorado ski team to its first win of the season, topping Utah and Denver at the Utah Invitational in Park City on Sunday.
It was the Buffs’ fifth straight victory, including an NCAA championship in Steamboat Springs in March. Colorado also leads the Montana State Invitational in Bozeman, Mont., which began last week and resumes Friday. It is Colorado’s longest winning streak since 1995.
CU scored 552 points followed by Utah at 537, Denver at 522 and Montana State at 441. Western State finished eighth with 295 points and Wyoming was 10th with 29.
Gelso’s time of 42 minutes, 22.3 seconds edged Denver’s Rene Reisshauer, who finished second in 42:27.3. In alpine, Western State’s Sarah Schaedler won the women’s giant slalom in 2:02.92. In the men’s slalom, Utah’s Tague Thorson won in 1:32.13, topping CU’s Stefan Hughes at 1:32.35.
Western St. wrestlers sixth in national duals
The Pittsburgh-Johnstown wrestling team, ranked fifth nationally in Division II, earned three falls down the stretch to earn a 27-15 victory over No. 9 Western State in the fifth-place match at the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Mountaineers (8-4) led 15-6 with four matches remaining after decision wins by Eddie Lopez at 125 pounds, Neil Samples (157) and Zach Lee (165) and a fall by Camille DuPont (149). But Pittsburgh-Johnstown rallied in the final four matches for the win.
