A 100-year-old Canon City structure believed to be a lodging place for President Theodore Roosevelt during a visit to Colorado was destroyed Sunday in a fire.
No one was in the three-story building during the fire, and no one was hurt, said Lt. Scott Johnson, spokesman for the Canon City Area Fire Protection District.
Firefighters called to the Deweese Lodge on Sunday afternoon found it engulfed in flames and smoke, Johnson said.
Twenty-five firefighters battled the fire for two hours. The building was estimated to be a total loss.
The historic lodge, built in 1899, had been under repair for damages stemming from a July 2005 fire, Johnson said.
Fremont County Sheriff investigators and the Colorado Bureau of Investigations are assisting fire officials with the cause and origin of the fire, he said.
