Doctors on Wednesday amputated the second leg of one of the 17-year-old Berthoud High School students seriously injured while changing a flat tire late Monday, 9News reported Wednesday.

Nikko Landeros had his second leg amputated a day after school officials reported that the other victim, Tyler Carron, had both legs amputated.

The accident occurred on Larimer County Road 17 near Spartan Avenue when an unidentified 17-year-old girl driving a Toyota Land Cruiser hit Landeros and Carron as they were retrieving a spare tire from the back of a 1999 Isuzu Trooper, police said.

Both boys were pinned between the vehicles. They were airlifted to Denver Health Medical Center.

Carron and Landeros were going home after a school dance. They are members of the football and wrestling teams.

The driver of the Toyota was not injured. Her name is not being released pending the outcome of the investigation. The Colorado State Patrol says charges are pending.
