Two snowboarders pleaded guilty Wednesday to sneaking under a rope but did not receive the maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine.
Patrick Thomas Geipel, 19, and Skye Reynolds Mitchell, 18, each were ordered to make a $200 charitable contribution to Summit County Open Space and Trails.
Geipel and Reynolds were caught on a closed run at Keystone ski area Nov. 3.
They were among the first people cited under a tougher new state law intended to crack down on skiers and snowboarders who duck boundary ropes.
“That’s a $200 run,” Geipel said, adding that he learned his lesson. “We really didn’t know it would be that tough.”
