Getting your player ready...

Don Gatewood, one of the central Colorado figures in schoolboy track and field for more than three decades, has retired as head coach at Montbello.

The former Manual High School star-turned- coach led the Warriors for 35 years and won eight team titles, including one at Manual, and dozens of individual and relay championships.

“They’ve all been good years, and I’ve loved it, but I’m not just as excited to go back,” Gatewood said. “But it has been worth it. I’ve worked with so many great young men.”

Gatewood, who turns 67 next month, led the Warriors to every Denver Prep title but two during his tenure. Gatewood said he hopes Montbello will turn the program over to Wayne Carter, who has been his assistant since 1986.
