Mead, a beverage made with honey, water, yeast and often, flavorings, has been around for thousands of years. If you’re a fan of the “drink of love” or are curious to taste, the fifth “International Mead Festival – Honeywines of the World” might just be the place to be the weekend before Valentine’s Day.

Mead comes in many flavors and ranges from dry to sweet. Herbs and spices, including ginger, coriander or cloves, or fruits give mead its special flavor.

Sample more than 90 commercial meads from around the world Feb. 9-10 at the Sheraton Denver West Hotel, 360 Union Blvd., Lakewood.

The event, the world’s largest competition and festival, also includes a private judging of commercial and home-made mead entries. Tastings are from 5-10 p.m. Feb. 9 and 4-9 p.m. Feb. 10. Cost is $30 in advance or $35 at the door.
