Guess what we found beneath the post- holiday snows that buried bucolic Lamar? A surprisingly good Thai restaurant.

Arriving after dark at the Army National Guard’s staging area for livestock-rescue efforts, we asked for dining recommendations from the fatigue-clad soldiers – and were skeptical when they emphatically directed us to the Thai Spicy Basil at 10 N. Main St. But even on a chilly night that crusted over already treacherous streets, the restaurant did a brisk business.

The spare but comfortable dining room offered much more than Thai cuisine – several Asian varieties appeared on the menu. We kicked things off with spinach and cream cheese won tons and spring rolls then segued to a couple of curry dishes. The peanut curry with broccoli, red peppers and tofu was good, although next time we’d ditch the tofu in favor of chicken or beef. The green curry with beef, however, was excellent.

Pleasant service and reasonable prices – about $30 for two, plus tip – were the clinchers that made us file this place away for future visits.
