Broomfield – All that was missing from Mountain View’s performance Friday night were some shorter shorts and longer socks. Everything else was old school.
The Mountain Lions passed, ran and shot circles around Broomfield with a crisp, fundamental offense that utilized picks and screens for loads of easy looks.
And most of those looks ended with a swish.
The Mountain Lions’ 60-41 victory was their second of the season over the Eagles and moved them atop the Western Division of the Class 4A Northern League.
The Loveland-based Mountain Lions (14-3, 10-2 league) quickly took over, held off a brief rally early in the third quarter and led by 20 throughout the fourth quarter en route to their third straight win.
Senior guard Anthony Trimarco scored a game-best 17 points and junior Jeremy Dickerson added 16 as the Mountain Lions hit eight 3-pointers and shot 47 percent from the floor.
“We were real focused,” Dickerson said. “We knew they were going to be fired up so we had to come out with more intensity.”
The Eagles (12-4, 9-2) had won eight straight since losing at Mountain View on Jan. 9.
Trimarco had no points in the first quarter and took just two shots as he elected to move the ball around and get the inside game started. Dickerson, Kevin Liddle and substitutes James Clem and Austin Dyekman all did well passing out of double teams and rebounding against the smaller Eagles.
“That’s how I think we should play every game,” Trimarco said. “Every close game we’ve had this year is just because we haven’t shot well; we always play great defense all the time.”
The Eagles made just 12 baskets, shot less than 20 percent and had 14 turnovers.
Broomfield trailed 29-16 at halftime and cut the deficit to seven with an early run. But the Mountain Lions regrouped and were up by 18 on Trimarco’s 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:32 left in the third quarter.
