Gov. Bill Ritter signed a bill Tuesday that will allow educators to measure individual student progress over time with statewide test scores now used to grade schools.
“This legislation is the first essential step toward accomplishing one of my primary goals, and that’s strengthening and streamlining the various federal, state and local accountability systems now in place in Colorado,” Ritter said.
Educators said current assessments in Colorado provide parents and teachers with only a limited snapshot of information.
Ritter said the measure (House Bill 1048) also will help achieve his 10-year goal of cutting the high school dropout rate and the state’s frustrating achievement gap in half.
