“Ancient” inspiration

Accomplished writers, composers and visual and performing artists can pursue their passion while surrounded by ancient architecture and the natural landscape of Mesa Verde National Park. They’ll also live in a historic, rustic residence during their stay. Participants are required to volunteer in the park during their residency. They also are asked to donate to the park an original piece of work. Entries must be postmarked before March 31. Finalists will be notified in April.

The Koshare Indian Museum in La Junta, Colorado is featuring an exhibit chronicling how the history of the Koshare Indian Dancers’ and the Arkansas Valley are intertwined with the events of World War II. Eight short years after the group’s beginning, World War II took more than 90 Koshares off to war, shaping the dancers and the museum through the 1940s and beyond.

In celebration of the life and work of Charles Darwin, the Museum of Nature & Science will screen the full-length documentary and follow the show with a discussion of the ideological tug-of-war between evolutionists and advocates of intelligent design. Filmmaker Randy Olson and his mom, Muffy Moose, who inspired her son to make the film when she realized the Kansas State Board of Education was attempting to adopt intelligent-design-inspired science standards in 2005, will be there too.
