House backs contraception bill
Hospitals would have to tell rape victims about the availability of emergency contraception under a bill endorsed in the House on Tuesday.
Without any objections, the House gave initial approval to Senate Bill 60 by Sen. Betty Boyd, D-Lakewood, who for years has been pushing different versions of the legislation.
Lawmakers passed her bills in 2005 and 2006 but both were vetoed by Republican Gov. Bill Owens.
Since then, the federal Food and Drug Administration has legalized over-the-counter sales of emergency contraception. The bill would ensure that all victims are told about its availability when they undergo rape exams.
