Nenad Gajic scored three goals in the second half, including the game-winner, and the Colorado Mammoth earned a 10-8 victory over the host Portland LumberJax on Thursday at the Rose Garden.
Gajic’s go-ahead goal was buoyed by Matt Taylor’s insurance goal with 5:34 remaining. Goaltender Gee Nash, who finished with 40 saves, kept Portland scoreless the rest of the way. And the Mammoth improved to 7-1, the best record in the National Lacrosse League. Portland dropped to 2-5.
DU lacrosse nabs a top-10 ranking
The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team received its third preseason accolade Thursday, a No. 10 ranking in the Lacrosse Magazine poll. The Pioneers previously received preseason nods from insidelacrosse.com (No. 14) and the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association coaches’ poll (No. 13).
Denver returns 27 players from the 2006 squad that recorded the best season in the program’s history, 12-5, and its first trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Bears swimmers earn all-conference plaudits
Four Northern Colorado swimmers were named to the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference all-conference team after UNC’s third-place finish in the league championship meet last weekend. Nan Liu, who was named most outstanding swimmer at the tournament after winning the 100 and 200 butterfly events and setting nine school records, leads the list. She’s joined by: Katie Schmitt, Nikki Plunkard and Sarah Cook.
