A possible fire at a Xcel substation knocked out power this afternoon to about 42,000 customers in Aurora, power company officials said.

The outage affected homes, businesses and street lights between 40th Avenue and Mississippi, officials said.

Xcel workers were trying to determine what started the outage at the substation located at Colfax and Potomac. Power was knocked out about 2:45 p.m. By 4:40 p.m., Xcel officials announced it had been restored.
