Despite fireworks from opponents, the House gave tentative approval to a plan today that would allow counties to regulate fireworks.

The measure (House Bill 1092) would allow county commissioners to prohibit or restrict the sale, use, and possession of fireworks in unincorporated areas of the county. An attempt to kill the bill failed on a 36-27 vote.

Rep. Marsha Looper, R-Calhan, said the bill could affect 307 businesses in Colorado that sell fireworks, even forcing them to close.

“I see this as an assault on fireworks in this state,” she said.

Supporters said fireworks cause major fire damage every year and counties should have the power to regulate the industry.
