Guillermo Alvarez of Denver, a 2006 U.S. all-around bronze medalist, will join three other gymnasts on the U.S. men’s team to compete in the 2007 American Cup at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla., on March 3.
Alvarez, a third-place finisher in the all-around for two consecutive years at the Winter Cup Challenge, was also a member of the 2006 U.S. world championship team. He joins Jonathan Horton, the defending American Cup champion, and Raj Bhavsar, a two-time world team silver medalist, both from Houston, on the team. Alexander Artemev of Morrison was named to the team in December.
“Each of these men has considerable international experience and complete a strong U.S. team,” said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics.
DU men’s lacrosse moves up in poll
The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team jumped two spots in the Inside Lacrosse Division I poll to No. 12, after the Pioneers’ season-opening win over then-No. 17 Penn State on Saturday. Johns Hopkins took over the top spot, up from No. 2.
Denver next travels to face No. 12 North Carolina on Saturday, and No. 6 Duke on Sunday.
CCU’s Stamer tops RMAC plaudits list
Brian Stamer, a 6-foot-7 junior forward from Colorado Christian, was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference East Division basketball player of the week. Marcus Mortensen, a 6-1 junior guard from Adams State, was named the West Division player of the week.
Denise Lopez, a 5-8 senior guard from Regis, was tabbed the women’s East Division player of the week. Stephanie Warnke, a 5-8 senior guard from Western State, earned the West Division honor.
