Jake Archibeque scored 25 points and Ian Anderson grabbed 14 rebounds Wednesday night as No. 10 seed Montezuma-Cortez (11-11) upset Palisade 67-60 in the first round of the Class 4A boys state basketball tournament.
Pueblo East’s A.J. Carbajal lit up Frederick for 27 points as the Eagles controlled the fourth quarter for an 81-69 victory in the Guy Gibbs Region. Other winners there were Glenwood Springs (18-5) and Liberty (13-10).
Nick Fox, Alex Miller and Brad Lubkeman scored in double figures as Golden (12-11) sneaked past Silver Creek 66-59. Pueblo Central (14-9), meanwhile, avoided an upset against Berthoud with a 59-58 victory.
On the other side of the bracket, Woodland Park had its hands full with Rock Canyon but managed a 73-71 victory. Greeley Central improved to 16-8 with a 46-41 victory over Centaurus.
In the first round of the Class 5A girls tournament, Grandview (10-13) separated by just enough in the second half for a 50-45 victory over Columbine, denying coach Jim Bartok his 300th win.
Tournament regular Monarch (13-10) handled Eaglecrest 69-45 behind Emily McMahon’s 18 points, and Colorado Springs’ Doherty (18-6) held off Loveland 49-42.
Stormye Everett led Overland (15-8) to a 55-46 victory over Mitchell with 18 points. Durango (9-13) welcomed Smoky Hill and handed the visitors a 65-54 loss.
Montbello (16-5) served the city right with a 66-40 victory over Wheat Ridge. Fort Collins (14-9) escaped Douglas County with a 53-47 victory, and Ponderosa and Boulder also advanced to the second round.
Rampart (13-10) beat George Washington 44-33 for the right to play top-seeded Regis.
