A cat belonging to a Hurricane Katrina evacuee has been recovered in Denver, and a local shelter is asking for help tracking down its owner.

Named Boots, the cat is a female brown tabby with white markings and is at the Dumb Friends League animal shelter, 2080 S. Quebec St.

The cat has a microchip identification implant imbedded under its skin that links the animal to owner information, but the data is out of date and the shelter cannot reach the owner.

The cat was first reported lost in November 2005 after being transported to Denver from the Gulf Coast, but a local resident actually had found it.

That person brought Boots to the shelter Friday and asked the shelter to locate the true owner, said Linda Houlihan of the Dumb Friends League.

Anyone with information on Boots’ owner can contact Dumb Friends at 303-751-5772, ext. 7240.

Staff writer Sean McDonald can be reached at 303-954-1661 or smcdonald@denverpost.com.
