We know this place well! We stop there for gas every time we drive to Ouray to visit the Hot Springs. This is a Conoco on the southern edge of Montrose. It’s the tree that George Bikford, who ran with the Dalton Gang, was lynched from on Aug. 9, 1878, for robbery and horse theft. Binford allegedly participated in the Coffeyville, Kan., raid with the Dalton Gang. The picture is of my son, Tristan, doing his best to avoid duplicating Bikford’s fate!
Don’t go out on that limb:
Jan Waller, Montrose (shown with her husband)
This tree is reputed to be at the actual site of hangings around the turn of the 20th century. I have heard the original tree was toppled and reset on a base, by the owner of the Conoco, for posterity.
