Adult size: Typically 124-211 pounds but as heavy as 325 pounds; 5.3 feet to 6 feet long. Females are 10 to 20 percent smaller than males.

Life span: Typically 12-15 years.

Number: Believed to be fewer than 50,000 mature breeding jaguars in the wild; about 100 in accredited North American zoos.

Range: Historically, from the southwestern United States to southern Argentina. It has disappeared from most of Mexico and the U.S in the north and most of Brazil and Argentina in the south.
