A high school student from Fort Collins was in fair condition Monday after she was injured when a school bus rolled over on Interstate 25.

Leslie Cross, 18, a senior at Poudre High School, underwent surgery for injuries to her head and face.

She was one of six people injured when the school bus they were riding in rolled over early Monday on northbound I-25 near Windsor. The other five were treated and released.

Two yellow buses from the Poudre Valley School District were returning to Fort Collins with members of the high school’s Impala Phonics chorale group, which had performed Sunday night at the Boettcher Concert Hall in downtown Denver. Each bus had roughly 30 students and chaperones.

Near the Windsor exit, one of the buses in the right lane veered to the left into the dirt median, then corrected back onto the pavement, according to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Gilbert Mares. The bus then went back into the median on the left, when the driver overcorrected and tipped the bus over on its left side trying to get it back up onto the pavement.

The cause of the accident has not been determined, but driver error is being investigated. Weather, road conditions, excessive speed and alcohol are not considered to be factors in the accident.

The accident occurred at 12:45 a.m., and closed the northbound lanes for more than two hours.

The passengers who weren’t injured were placed in the second bus and returned to the school.
