A 17-year-old girl involved in the car crash that resulted in two Berthoud teens losing their legs will be charged with careless driving, Larimer County District Attorney’s officials said today.

Michelle Berra, 17, who was a Berthoud High School classmate of Tyler Carron and Nikko Landeros, will be issued summons for the misdemeanor charges in the next few days for the accident where authorities said she hit Carron and Landeros with her Land Cruiser on the night of Jan. 15.

“We’ve been in touch with her attorney and she knows the summons are coming,” DA’s spokeswoman Linda Jensen said.

If convicted, Berra could face a sentencing range of 10 days to a year in jail, a $100 to $1,000 fine or a combination of that plus probation, Jensen said.

Carron and Landeros were struck by the Land Cruiser as they stood at the rear of their Isuzu changing a flat tire on the side of Larimer County Road 17 near Spartan Avenue, authorities said.

Both boys, who were popular wrestlers and football players at their school, were airlifted to a nearby hospital but the severity of their injuries required the amputation of both boys’ legs. They remained in the hospital for additional treatments until earlier this month.
