Greater sandhill cranes have made their annual return to the San Luis Valley near Alamosa, one of Colorado’s finest seasonal wildlife displays.

Approximately 25,000 birds migrate through the valley on their path north toward their breeding grounds. Most gather on the Monte Vista and Alamosa national wildlife refuges, where visitors may approach within reasonable distances. Viewing also is available at Rio Grande, Higel and Russell Lakes state wildlife areas.

A highlight of the display will be the 24th annual Monte Vista Crane Festival from March 9-11, when various programs and guided tours will be available.

Good news for hungry

Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry, an organization that provides processed game meat to Colorado’s hungry and homeless, has received a $2,000 grant from the National Rifle Association Foundation. This will allow FHFH to resume its operations in 2007 following a year’s inactivity from lack of funding.
