A 17-year-old girl involved in the crash that resulted in two Berthoud High School wrestlers losing their legs will be charged with careless driving, Larimer County District Attorney’s officials said Tuesday.

Michelle Berra, a classmate of Tyler Carron and Nikko Landeros, will be issued a summons for the misdemeanor charges in the next few days for the accident. Authorities said she hit Carron and Landeros with her Toyota Land Cruiser sport utility vehicle on the night of Jan. 15.

“We’ve been in touch with her attorney, and she knows the summons are coming,” DA spokeswoman Linda Jensen said.

If convicted, Berra could face a sentencing range of 10 days to a year in jail, a fine of $100 to $1,000, or a combination plus probation, Jensen said.

Carron and Landeros were struck by the Land Cruiser as they stood at the rear of their Isuzu Trooper SUV changing a flat tire on the side of Larimer County Road 17, authorities said.

Both boys, popular wrestlers and football players at their school, were airlifted to a nearby hospital. The severity of their injuries required the amputation of their legs.

Family members and school officials could not be reached for comment.
