COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-
The Gazette newspaper laid off 23 employees and eliminated the equivalent of 10 full-time vacant positions Friday, Publisher P. Scott McKibben said.
McKibben said the cuts came in every department, including about 10 in the newsroom. No senior executives or senior management workers were laid off, he said.
“With the ever-changing media landscape and the advances in technology and a lot of the investments that the newspaper has made over the year, particularly in equipment, we sat back and looked and asked are there any processes, any procedures, any jobs that we can do more efficiently?” said McKibben, who took over as publisher at the paper in December.
The Gazette employs about 475 people. McKibben said he did not anticipate any more layoffs this year.
“I think the process has bought our head count in line with where we need to be,” he said.
The Gazette is owned by Irvine, Calif.-based Freedom Communications. It’s the company’s second-largest newspaper, with a daily circulation of about 98,000 and nearly 110,000 on Sundays.
